OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

Safety, OSHA, and Workers Comp are all in the front of every construction contractor’s mind. This is no different at Wooten Construction. In 1994 Ray Wooten attended a week long Safety Management Seminar sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America. This began Wooten Construction’s intense organization of their company’s Safety Program. Ray recruited his son, Ken to serve as the company’s new safety officer, a position Ken holds to this day. Ken began working half days... six AM to six PM... to accomplish the company’s goal.

Wooten After Hours

Ken researched the company’s NCCI Safety Modifier and found that it was at a 1.15. He then structured the Wooten Safety Program to include the development of a company safety manual, safety inspections, drug testing, accident investigation, recurrent training, and a progressive discipline policy.

Ray and Ken both felt that they were moving in the right direction, but they felt the safety program needed a little something more. They eventually came up with a “Safety Lottery”. The “Safety Lottery” was a reward for its employees for actually being safe. With the addition of the “Safety Lottery”, Wooten Constructions Safety Program took shape. Over the next three years they were able to reduce their NCCI Safety Modifier to .83 where it has remained consistently ever since.

Today Wooten Construction actively participates with the Carpenter and Laborer Unions to provide safety training for its employees. They have also brought in outside entities to conduct safety inspections in order to remove any hint of bias. Wooten Construction has partnered with NM OSHA and has expanded its progressive discipline policy to include its subcontractor’s employees. The end result of Wooten Constructions efforts in the area of safety has been improved worker safety, improved productivity, better employee morale, and an improved bottom line for Wooten and its clients.
